Putin Reveals Russia Has Dedicated TV Channel for Indian Films: “We Love Them”

Russian President Vladimir Putin once again expressed his admiration for Indian cinema, highlighting its lasting influence and cultural importance in Russia. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on October 2, Putin said that the bond between India and Russia extends beyond politics and economics, reaching deeply into cultural and humanitarian exchanges.
During his address, the Russian leader revealed that his country even runs a dedicated television channel exclusively for Indian movies. “We love Indian cinema. In fact, Russia is probably the only country in the world that has a separate TV channel just for Indian films,” he said, underscoring the strong popularity of Bollywood in Russian society.
Longstanding Popularity of Bollywood in Russia
Putin’s remarks are not new. Over the years, he has repeatedly acknowledged the deep affection Russians have for Indian films. Last year, he openly stated that among all BRICS nations, Indian movies enjoy the highest popularity in Russia. He emphasized that Bollywood’s influence is unique, with round-the-clock broadcasts on a special channel dedicated to showcasing Indian films.
The fascination with Indian cinema in Russia is not recent—it stretches back to the Soviet era. Films starring legendary actors such as Raj Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty drew massive crowds in theatres across the former USSR. Songs, dances, and storytelling styles from Hindi films became part of the cultural fabric, creating a connection that still endures.
Cultural Ties Beyond Politics
While addressing the audience in Sochi, Putin stressed that Indo-Russian ties are not limited to government-to-government relations but include people-to-people connections. He noted that many Indian students continue to pursue higher education in Russia and that the country welcomes them, along with their culture. According to him, these cultural exchanges further strengthen bilateral relations.
Putin’s Upcoming Visit to India
Putin’s comments came just days after reports confirmed that he will travel to India in December 2025. The Russian president himself confirmed the visit, saying he is eagerly looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he described as a “dear friend.”
“I am looking forward to my trip in early December and I highly await my meeting with my dear friend, our trustworthy partner, Prime Minister Modi,” Putin said. Earlier, on October 2, he praised Modi as a “wise leader” who always puts the interests of his country first.
A “Special” Relationship
Putin emphasized that the relationship between India and Russia remains “special” and continues to thrive despite global challenges. The cultural admiration for Indian films, alongside growing educational and humanitarian ties, is seen as a testament to the enduring warmth between the two nations.
As Russia prepares for Putin’s visit to New Delhi, his repeated praise for Indian cinema serves as a reminder that soft power and cultural diplomacy remain as vital as political alliances. The ongoing love for Bollywood in Russia highlights how art, cinema, and cultural exchange play a powerful role in strengthening international friendships.
