Canada Rejects 80% of Indian Student Visas in 2025: What It Means for Aspirants

For years, Canada was considered the sapno ka desh (land of dreams) for Indian students—world-class education, career opportunities, and a safe lifestyle. But in 2025, that dream is turning into a sapna tutna (broken dream) for many. Nearly 80% of study permit applications from Indian students have been rejected this year—the highest denial rate in more than a decade.

A Shocking Rejection Wave

Recent data shows that four out of five Indian students who applied in Q2 2025 were denied study permits, making them the most affected international group. This is despite Indians forming about 40% of Canada’s total international student population.

Even though fewer applications were filed this year, rejections surged by over 26% compared to Q1. In short: kam applications gaye, par fir bhi jyada students reject hue.

Why Is Canada Doing This?

The reason is simple—Canada is facing ghar ki problem. High rent, limited houses, pressure on jobs and local infrastructure have pushed the government to reduce international student intake.

  • In 2024, a two-year cap on study permits was announced.
  • In 2025, another 10% cut came into effect.
  • Students must now show higher proof of funds—CA$20,635 (₹13.13 lakh), increasing further from September 2025.

Many rejections also happen because visa officers doubt whether students will return to India after studies. Ye soch ke wajah se hi, 75% cases mein visa inkaar ho gaya.

A Global Shift in Student Choices

The number of new international students going to Canada has already dropped by 70% in the first half of 2025 compared to last year.

Meanwhile, Germany chamak raha hai (Germany is shining) as a new favorite. With low-cost or free education, English programs, and a strong economy, Indian student numbers there have more than doubled in the last five years. Germany now attracts 31% of Indian students, while Canada’s share has fallen sharply from 18% in 2022 to just 9% in 2024.

What This Means for Indian Aspirants

For Indian students, ek baat clear hai—Canada ab easy option nahi raha. Approval rates have crashed to 38% in 2025, compared to a steady 60% for the past decade.

Lekin doors band hote hi naye raaste bhi khulte hain. Countries like Germany, with affordable shiksha (education) and better job prospects, are becoming the new dream destinations. The US, UK, and Australia still attract many, but affordability and opportunity are making Germany stand out.

Final Word

The Canadian dream is not gone—but it has become much tougher. With stricter rules, higher costs, and rising rejection rates, Indian students now need to plan carefully, explore multiple destinations, and prepare stronger applications.
